The end of an era

August 30th, 2007

Sorry about the lack of input here over the past week or so.  We’ve received bad news on the family front and my attention is focused there at the moment.

I’ll get back on a regular schedule here just as soon as things are put in order.  I’ll let everyone know exactly what the drama was when it’s concluded as well.

WPAds, Adserver for Wordpress

August 25th, 2007

I’m working on several WordPress based projects right now. A few of these projects will require advertising a little more robust (and profitable) than Google AdSense alone. Now I’m not saying that AdSense hasn’t made me a few dollars here and there, but for two of the sites I’m putting together I’m going to have a need to sell my own advertising blocks, and it’s much more convenient to have that functionality built into the dashboard.

Enter WPAds. Unlike a lot of ad servers for WordPress, WPAds doesn’t rely on a text file or anything else I’m going to have to spend a ton of time mucking with on a weekly basis. The code is object oriented, cleanly commented and appears fairly simple to modify if the need arises. (and it almost always does in larger applications!)

I’ve only tinkered with this plugin a bit today, but so far it seems pretty stable and worked well for me on my test installation. I’ll revisit later and give a more time-tested review.

I did not see a GPL license attached to the plugin, so my assumption is that it’s not released under the GPL, though I’m still checking into this. In any case, don’t release a derivative version if you make modifications, unless you’re sure that it’s legal to do so.

Cliche Away!

August 22nd, 2007

If you write science fiction, or are just a fan of the genre, you’ll appreciate The Grand List of Overused Science Fiction Clichés, hosted at John’s Freeloading Home Page.  John Has a pretty exhaustive list of commonly used Sci-fi clichés from multimple sources, including the venerable-but-flawed Star Trek series.

If you write science fiction and want a quick reference as to what you should avoid, or if you’re a fan and would just like a good chuckle, check it out.

WordPress Themes that Don’t Suck

August 15th, 2007

I may be the last person in the WordPress community to have discovered this site, but I was pleasantly surprised when I did. It’s called WordPress Themes that Don’t Suck, and for once the name pretty much lives up to the expectation. Instead of the massive outpouring of rebuilt Kubrick themes, with the occasional updated K2, WordPress Themes that Don’t Suck is doing a pretty good job of showing off high quality themes for the Internet’s blogging platform of choice.

Not only are these guys giving out themes that don’t just waste space on your server, but they’ll give you the reason that a theme doesn’t suck, which can either be informative or just downright funny.

Take their reasoning why the iTheme WordPress theme doesn’t suck:

Why it Doesn’t Suck:
An OS X themed theme. Need I say more? OK, how about drag-and-drop panels?

The site isn’t updated all that frequently, but it’s definitely worth adding to your RSS reader of choice for the latest updates.

What are you waiting for? go check out WordPress Themes that Don’t Suck!

August 10th, 2007

O.K. Folks, this one looks quite interesting.  There’s a Firefox companion extension for the Oe Click Installer Plugin for WordPress.  If you’re running the OneClick Installer plugin, (I’m not, but I’m going to look into it) be sure to check out the extension here.
