Real beauty is on the inside

Maybe I’m just old fashioned.  Perhaps as a foodie by profession I worry about health more than some people do.  Perhaps it’s because I’ve been on this planet long enough to realize that you really can’t judge a book by its cover.  It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Earlier today I clicked a link in twitter that took me to This page, which claims it is a:

Collection of beautiful women’s whose charm will drive you crazy…

Among other things. (In very bad English, so I won’t continue quoting the actual text.)

After taking a quick glance. (Hey, I AM red blooded!) my very first thought was to blast this into my twitter stream:

What’s gorgeous about a woman so skinny you can count her ribs? c’mon girls, eat something! (and keep it down)

While I will admit that some of the women pictured in this random and obviously subjective collection are gorgeous and most definitely healthy, I can’t get past all the girls so thin that they quite obviously cannot have a proper daily caloric intake.

As a father,  wonder how I’m supposed to assure my daughters, who are both thin, but think they’re fat, that they aren’t when the media and popular culture are telling them they should weigh 20 pounds less than they do.  I wonder how many other parents with daughters who already wear a size one or two have to assure their girls that they are not, in fact, already overweight?

Then comes the other question… What are these women like in person?  I can’t imagine someone who is chronically hungry can be a joy to be around, especially if you happen to be anywhere near a buffet.  Being hungry generally makes even the nicest people cranky.

Are these ladies someone you’d like to spend the afternoon and evening talking to, or simply the object of an anonymous audiences’ ogling?  If you wouldn’t want to spend a full hour alone with them, do they still constitute as beautiful?  In my mind, the answer is No.

The old saying is true.  Beauty comes from within.  It lives in the eyes, the smile and a laugh that makes you want to laugh along.  Let’s stop perpetuating the illusion of the thing rather than the actual nature of it.

Girls, you’re already beautiful.  All you have to do is smile and the whole world will realize it.

*Please note, I don’t know the women pictured and am not saying that they are not a collection of the sweetest people in the world.  One can never know about someone else until they have actually spent time with them.*
