The term “voice” is used by authors to describe the way a writer is perceived by his or her readers. In short, it’s the tone and style of your writing. All writers strive to make their written voice as distinctive as their spoken voice but like many things in life, the decision as to what your voice should be has no right or wrong answer; it’s a matter of preference and perception.

Even seasoned authors may struggle with the issue of voice from time to time. It’s easy to forget to put your own character forward when you’re in the middle of a project, especially one that has a tight deadline.

Make no mistake, bloggers are writers. In the world of blogging the sun rises and sets on the written word and the voice that comes through to the reader from the characters on a virtual page. Any stigma about a blogger not being an actual writer is something that should have been left by the wayside a long time ago. Some bloggers may not be very good writers, but hey are writers nonetheless.

Let “You” Shine Through

The voice you use on your blog depends on a number of factors, but the most important factor in deciding your style of writing is determining the way you are most comfortable holding a conversation with your readers.

Let your personality show in the way you write. Readers expect to find a real person behind the words on a blog page, not a monotonous sales pitch or a set of factoids. The best bloggers in the world come across as people and so should you.

If you’re a bubbly person, write that way. There’s no reason to tone down your personality just because you’re writing. Your energy will carry through and energize your readers which will keep them coming back for more. If you’re the more serious type, pick a topic that your tone complements, your readers will appreciate the sobriety of your writing.

Don’t analyze every word for the tone it’s sending. Your voice will develop over time and you’ll find that your readers return because of your particular style and cadence. If your voice is engaging enough, they’ll tell their friends, too.

Write Like You’re Talking With A Good Friend

Whether you’re blogging to sell a product or just to tell the world about your day you should always write like you’re talking to a close friend that you truly enjoy speaking with. Writing this way will help your readers feel like they are a part of what you’re doing, not just being spoken “at.” One of the keys to a successful blog is a dialogue between the writer and the reader. If your readers don’t feel included, they’re going to find someone else to read.

Remember to ask questions and to answer comments as promptly as possible. Always treat your readers like you’re happy to see them. Keep your writing personable and conversational. Write in your own voice. If you remember these things you’ll be well on your way to developing a large readership, no matter what you’re writing about.
