Thanks for an interesting entry and blog – will subscribe. I’ve never forgotten Camus’ famous “Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don’t know.” from The Outsider. The same efficient tone goes on very disturbingly throughout the novel

I think this holds true in on-line writing as much as it does in fiction if not more so. If you don’t hook people with the first line, they will click away and read something else. At least with a book, readers are far less likely to stop with the title!

I always think that Neil Gaiman writes great first lines.
“There was once a young man who wished to gain his Heart’s Desire.” is from Stardust
“They do it with mirrors.” – Smoke & Mirrors
“It begins, as most things begin, with a song” – Anansi Boys
