This Time It’s Personal

You may recognize the title of this entry as being from The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.  It’s not a literal thing, I’m not lost at sea, nor am I thirsty, but it’s the way my project load feels right now.

I just took over as managing editor for Enchanted Ramblings, an online magazine that started its life as a home for fledgling Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers.  Since its inception however, a horde of problems has plagued the thing, including narcissism, hubris, complete lack of focus, and inside bickering. The only way to clean it up was to go in and take over, and when i discovered that the domain hadn’t been paid and was about to be turned off for lack of payment, that’s exactly what I did.

If you know the place, don’t go looking for changes right this second.  We’re still trying to consolidate staff, purpose and pecking order, let alone spark the phoenix to rise from the embers of a dying concept.

And don’t look at me like I’m a complete mercenary.  My wife was one of the founding members of ER, and has been since before we were married.  This move was made because I saw the potential for something wonderful, and because I’ll fight like you’ve never seen me fight to make sure that her idea doesn’t die.

Where does that leave me?

With 80 mb of pure html chaff, all of which needs to be turned into a dynamic, easy to use, easy to maintain site.  And that site now needs to pay me back the money I just dumped into it, after never having made a penny…

Yeah, I’m bitter, but I’m excited too.  If I can pull it out of the nose dive, it’ll work this time.  There was never a doubt
